Designers provide prompts, and the AI software creates visually realistic renderings sourced from online images or uploaded visuals. Popular AI tools include Planner5D, Interior AI, and MidJourney. The appeal for designers is clear: AI can quickly produce design concepts featuring various compositions, colors, and furniture arrangements. In fact, AI-generated renderings can be so sophisticated that they often blur the line between virtual designs and real-life creations.

Potential Pitfalls of AI in Design
While AI presents numerous benefits, should interior designers be eager to adopt it? Many of us already use AI daily, whether through Siri, Alexa, or similar tools. However, as designers incorporate more AI into their work, there is a risk of becoming overly dependent on it. Creativity and design intuition take time to develop, and relying on AI for these tasks could stifle one’s artistic growth.
Although AI can generate thousands of design ideas in moments, can any of them truly be considered original? Take artist Greg Rutkowski, for example. He is known for his distinctive fantasy art style, yet a quick online search reveals countless images mimicking his unique approach—images he never created. The culprit? AI. This “style copying” presents an ethical dilemma. While the generated images may be original, the artistic style is not. Many artists, including illustrators like Amy Stelladia, have voiced their concerns about AI. Stelladia publicly criticized an AI app for using her artwork to create portraits without her consent.
“They are meant to compete with our own work, using pieces and conscious decisions made by artists but purged from all that context and meaning,” Stelladia said. “It just feels wrong to use people’s life work without consent, to build something that can take work opportunities away.”
